Many state officials are displeased with new 10-cent gas tax that goes into effect Sunday.

One of the most vocal opponents to the increase was District 14 State Senator Amy Sinclair, who wasn’t pleased with tactics used by House Speaker Kraig Paulsen and the Ways and Means Committee to get the measure passed for debate.
Paulsen replaced a committee member who was opposed to the gas tax with one who was for it and the measure made it to the House floor for debate by a narrow 13 to 12 vote. It then won bipartisan support in both the Iowa House and Senate before being signed into law by Governor Terry Branstad Wednesday.
Sinclair says she’s disappointed to say least on how the measure was handled and believes it will take time for the Iowa Legislature to be able to function properly again because of the tactics used to pass this bill.
