National Fire Prevention Week begins tomorrow. National Fire Prevention Week is observed annually on the Sunday through Saturday period in which October 9 falls, in commemoration of the Great Chicago Fire, which began October 8,1871, and did most of its damage October 9th. The Great Chicago Fire killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures and burned more than 2,000 acres. Fire departments around the area will hold different events throughout the week to bring awareness to fire prevention and fire safety, including visiting local schools. Captain Jeff DeVoll and Fire Fighter Spencer McCarty with Knoxville Fire and Rescue tell KNIA/KRLS News the department will be speaking with students about developing a fire escape plan as well as fire prevention and safety tips so kids know what to do if and when there is a fire. Fire Prevention Day will be observed on Wednesday, October 9th  with Preparedness being selected as this year’s theme with the slogan “Not every hero wears a cape. Plan and Practice your Escape.”
