Pella Christian took control early and never looked back as they rolled to a 38-14 win over Central Decatur to stay perfect in Class 1A District 6 play. The Eagles came out on fire needing just three plays and :45 on the games opening offensive possession to find the end zone as Kyle Nikkel connected with Trey Hugen on a 21 yard pass to put the Eagles up 7-0. Nieuwsma scored again with four minutes remaining in the first half and the Eagles led 21-7 at halftime. Central Decatur scored with 7:43 left in the third quarter to pull within 21-14, but that’s all the closer it would get as the Eagles answered back just three minutes later with a 61 yard drive capped off with Hugen’s second touchdown of the night , a 5 yard pass from Nikkel, then added another score from Nieuwsma and a 22 yard field goal late in the game by Hugen as icing on the cake. The Eagles had another solid offensive performance with 359 total yards, including 260 on the ground led by Nieuwsma’s 154 yards and three touchdowns on 29 carries. The Eagles defense was strong for the second straight week collecting three interceptions including two by Alex Branderhorst in his first game back from injury. The win improves Pella Christian to 4-1 overall and 3-0 in Class 1A District 6. With Nodaway Valley’s loss to Mount Ayr last night, the Eagles are now in sole possession of first place in the district and travel to Nodaway Valley Friday night.
