In a game that started out as a slugfest, the Central College baseball team outlasted Cornell College yesterday afternoon, as the Dutch routed the Rams 17-7 in Mount Vernon. Central’s 17 runs came courtesy of 17 hits, led by a two run, four RBI performance from catcher Blake Smith, who came a triple shy of batting for the cycle on the day.
On the mound, D.J. Glasgow was roughed up for five runs in the first inning, leaving Central trailing 5-3, but he was able to settle down to throw five shut-out innings while his offense added seven runs in the third inning and three more in the fourth to break the game open, before adding three more in the sixth.
Central is now 16-7 overall and 5-3 in the Iowa Conference and will resume play against Cornell this afternoon with a pair of seven-inning games starting at 1:00 p.m.
