The National Weather Service predicted freezing or near freezing temperatures overnight last night and tonight. Marion and surrounding counties are currently under a freeze warning. Cheryl Nunnikoven with Dutch Meadows Landscaping and Garden Center in Pella says most plants should be able to weather the temperatures that are near freezing, and that it is only when temperatures are at 28 degrees and lower that significant damage occurs. Overnight temperatures reached that 28 degrees threshold in Marion County. Nunnikoven says that if you see frost on your plants, rinsing them off with water may prevent damage. Many damaged plants can also be trimmed later.
