A University of Iowa student from Melcher-Dallas was among a group of five students who met in a roundtable discussion with President Barack Obama yesterday. Marissa Boles is a senior at Iowa majoring in psychology. She took part in the discussion about the impact of student loan debt. All five students in the discussion have taken out Stafford federal loans to help finance their education. Those loans are set to see their interest rates double into the six percent range this summer unless Congress works on an extension, adding an average of $1000 to each person’s student debt. Boles took out the loans knowing that college was important, despite the financial challenge. Both President Obama and likely GOP nominee Mitt Romney have called for Congress to work on extending the lower interest rates so to keep down student debt.
