Customers of MidAmerican Energy, Alliant Energy, and Pella Cooperative are being warned about a scam that claims President Barack Obama is providing credits or applying payments to utility bills. Company representatives say that in Iowa, many of the scam artists are contacting customers via phone. Customers have also been visited in person by scammers or contacted via text or social media. Customers are being told that they can make a utility payment by using a routing number supplied by the scam artist.
Anyone suspicious of their conversation should end it and call your utility for assistance. Customer service associates can confirm whether the call was from the utility company or if it was possibly a scammer. Local law enforcement should also be contacted immediately if a customer receives a suspicious call.
