Marion County Public Health warns State Fair-goers this weekend to take precautions, especially around swine. 158 cases of swine flu have been reported nationwide this year, though none have occurred in Iowa. Nurse Judi Van Holzen says a flu virus spreads from pig-to-person just as it does from person-to-person – coughing, sneezing, runny noses, and contact with infected animals. No strand has proved to be unusually dangerous this year, but Van Hulzen recommends you take precaution such as washing your hands and avoiding eating or drinking in livestock barns. Iowa State Fair policies state they will remove swine if they begin to show flu symptoms.
