Bridge repair is a constant challenge for those overseeing infrastructure projects, and Marion County is no exception. Marion County Engineer Roger Schletzbaum says they have around 240 bridges in the county, including 40 that have load limits posted due to age and wear. He explains that they are required to inspect bridges every two years; those bridges that show more signs of deterioration are inspected up to every year.
Schletzbaum says that it’s a challenge to keep up, as bridges are continuously deteriorating, but they have limited funding. He adds that they have had to close some bridges that they haven’t been able to replace in time. Schletzbaum says that those were on less-traveled roads, but every bridge closure impacts at least one homeowner or landowner. He hopes that they can replace some of those closed bridges as more funds come in.
