With the United States government partially shut down, citizens from all walks of life are being affected. Each year, Central Professor Anya Butt tasks her junior class to come up with a project that they have to write a proposal for in their junior year, and then follow up in their senior year to actualize the idea. Last year, her students asked the Corps of Engineers if they had any items on their wish list. The concept emerged for a small amphitheatre that the Corps could lead programs from, a prairie maze and a number of other features. The Corps made some modifications, and then over the summer, approached Vermeer Corporation, who offered to make the project part of their service day. The service day with Vermeer was scheduled for October 5th, but due to the shutdown, North Overlook is closed, which means the service day has been postponed. Butt says she’s still hoping that the government gets up and running again before their rain date this Saturday, but if that doesn’t happen, the project could be postponed indefinitely.
