Many area high school speech students are headed to state competitions next week.
The Pella High School Speech Team earned 32 I (one) ratings and 10 II (two) ratings at the Iowa High School Speech Association District Individual Events Contest last Saturday, and nine of the 10 events at Pella Christian received I ratings. Pella High Speech Coach Ashlee Whittington says individual speech events can cover a wide range of ideas, and students have the chance to write their own material, interpret classic authors and share their opinions on a variety of topics. Students that earned I ratings have earned a spot at the State competition on March 14th at Cedar Rapids Kennedy High School.
PCHS students earning the I’s at the District event include: Malia Beatty (Storytelling and Lit Program), Joel Larson (Musical Theatre and Poetry), Sarah Meyer (Poetry), Maverick Risley (Storytelling), Jalayna Morgan (Poetry), and Ryan Van Gilst (Prose and Lit Program).
