A civil lawsuit has been filed in Marion County for the death of Shirley Carter.

According to court records, Shirley’s husband Bill Carter and family members are suing Jason Carter, her son, and the defendant.

The new civil lawsuit was filed in Marion County District Court.

Shirley Carter was found shot to death at her home in rural Lacona in June 2015. Marion County Sheriff Jason Sandholdt said she was shot with a rifle.

The criminal investigation into her death by the Marion County Sheriff’s Office and Iowa DCI continues. Charges have not been filed.
