De Scoop Ice Cream in Pella is now operated by a local non-profit.
The Well Resource Center is now taking orders for cold treats and using proceeds to benefit their programs.
Executive Director Jayson Henry tells KNIA/KRLS News the ministry’s involvement in opening the ice cream shop has developed over the past few months with previous ownership.
“The family that owns the property came to us and said, ‘would you like to run this, would you like to use this as a way to fund your ministry?'” Henry says. “Obviously we’re very excited to say, ‘Yes, we’re doing that.'”
Melanie Wilborn is one of the many volunteers who will run the store, and says the growth in volunteers helping with the ministry reflects the generosity of the community.
“It’s amazing to watch the response of people wanting to come in and volunteer,” she says. “Maybe they don’t want to help in the ice cream shop, but they donate the brownies or the Dutch Letters for the ice cream treats, so even a little thing goes a long way to help.”
The store will be run in a similar manner to as it has in years past, both say. There is a need for more staff, and those who would like to volunteer should contact The Well Resource Center at 621-0164.
