The City of Pella has posted their annual bloom status map.
Community Services Director Jeanette Vaughan says tulips have sprung up all over town thanks to the warmer weather earlier in the season, but they’ve slowed considerably over the past few weeks.
“We’ve had a nice, long stretch of cool, cloudy weather that slowed growth but a few are showing their color,” she says. “Some are ahead of schedule but many have yet to produce stems or buds.”

Those flowers in protected areas close to brick or concrete tend to bloom earlier due to the warmth provided by their surroundings, she says.
The City of Pella parks staff and volunteers planted over 101,000 tulips bulbs in City-owned beds last fall that have a variety of different bloom times in order to extend the season.
