A group of residents will spend their Saturday communicating with others throughout North America.
Kyle Zylstra with the Pella Amateur Radio Club says the group is taking part in an annual field day exercise in simulated emergency situations.
“The premise of the activity is setting up a radio station in less than normal conditions, so basically simulating a major disaster that people can set up radio stations and communicate to other people in America.”
Zylstra says they want to get young people involved in amateur radio as well.
“Field Day is points driven, so different clubs across America are doing this and there’s different ways you can accrue points,” he says. “One of the ways is to get youth out to get them involved in making contacts with other contacts and also doing an educational activity.”
They invite the public to watch or participate with them during their simulations from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Fifield Shelterhouse #1 at Lake Red Rock.
