Multiple rounds of heavy rain and severe weather prompted some localized flooding in northern Marion County.
The KNIA/KRLS Severe Weather Action Team was on the air twice, with five staff members contributing to on-air coverage and listeners calling in reports for two severe thunderstorm warnings issued for portions of Marion County — extreme western areas and all of Warren County from 9:11 to 9:43 p.m., and the second for the northern half of the county and all of Jasper from 9:58 to 10:45 p.m. — just after the final laps of the Knoxville Races were called due to the impending weather.
Overnight, many areas in the county received between 1-2″ of rain, with the following reports coming from area rain gauges:
As of 5 a.m.:
Pella (near downtown) – 1.37″
Lake Red Rock – 1.04″
English Creek (near Knoxville) – 1.17″
Des Moines River near Swan – 3.23″
— near Tracy – .89″
Cedar Creek near Bussey – 1.13″
Knoxville (KNIA/KRLS) – .67″
Rescue crews responded to Elk Horn Drive southwest of Otley for a report of a van with five people inside getting stuck in flood waters. All persons inside were rescued and safe, with the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, Pella Rural Fire, Pella Ambulance, and possibly other agencies responding at 10:42 Saturday evening.
The KNIA/KRLS Severe Weather Action Team is on the air with live coverage for any severe thunderstorm or tornado warning for any portion of Marion County, with backup generators to ensure the coverage stays on if the power goes out.
