The Marion County Sheriff’s Office wants to remind residents to celebrate the 4th of July holiday responsibly.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration during the 2016 4th of July holiday, 188 people were killed nationwide in crashes involving at least one driver or motorcycle operator with a blood alcohol concentration over the legal limit. Iowa had four alcohol related fatalities in 2016, with one in 2017. The Marion County Sheriff’s Office recommends making a transportation plan or designating a sober driver before celebrating, and that if you see a friend planning to drink and drive to take their keys and call them a ride.
