An atypically high number of open enrolled students for the Knoxville School District means a request to the state, for the authority to obtain more funding for their needs.
The Knoxville School District is submitting its annual report to the state, complete with a request to the School Budget Review Commission for the ability to obtain over $180,000 in additional monies through property taxes.
District Business Manager Craig Mobley tells KNIA/KRLS News this is meant to compensate for around 26 students who are open enrolled.
“Sometimes what’ll happen is, if somebody moves in they move from another district; they either build a house or move to a house that’s within our district but they still, they want to automatically open enroll back out to go to the original district that they came from,” Mobley says. “We have certain locations in our district, within our district where that’s common; this year, it just happened to be a more significant number than in the past.”
He says it’s essential for the school board to go through this process of getting approval from the state; otherwise, the district would not have the legal ability to obtain the additional funding necessary.
