In April, Officer Darrel Brown with the Knoxville Police Department was recognized as VFW’s Officer of the Year for the State of Iowa. The state’s VFW organization chose him after he was named as the top first responder for this region. Today, Ofc. Brown will be recognized as National Law Enforcement Officer of the Year by the VFW. Ofc. Brown will be presented the award by VFW Department of Iowa Commander, Carol Whitmore during the VFW’s 98th Annual Iowa State Convention in Des Moines at 1:30 p.m. The celebration will be held in the conference center at Holiday Inn Des Moines located at 6111 Fleur Drive. Ofc. Brown previously served in the National Guard, and says he’s always had an affinity for veterans; He is planning on retiring from the department this November after 28 years of service.
