As the holiday season begins, families across the country begin putting up their holiday decorations. Chief Cal Wymam with Knoxville Fire and Rescue tells KNIA/KRLS News people need to remember not to overload their outlets and to make sure the lights or decorations they are putting up have been tested by a third party to make sure they are safe to use. Wyman says residents should be careful with what decorations they’re using and to always make sure if they have a live tree that the tree stays watered. Wymans also says this time of year a lot of issues with carbon monoxide poisoning can occur with so many people using their furnace for the first time. He says to make sure the batteries in carbon monoxide detectors are checked and if the detector is more than 10 years old, it needs to be replaced.
