Pella’s basketball teams each ended senior night on a sour note, as Dallas Center-Grimes swept the doubleheader, with the Lady Dutch falling 60-45 and the boys dropping their game 71-66, as heard on KRLS2.

The Pella boys stumbled against the Mustangs early, falling behind by 17 points with 4:30 left in the 2nd quarter. But as they are capable of doing, the Dutch quickly closed the gap by the half to three. The teams traded 15 lead changes and ties after the Dutch took their first lead with 3:59 left in the fourth.

However, Pella fell behind late and despite several chances to tie or take a lead in the final minute, they couldn’t find the offense when they needed it.

Head Coach Derek Schulte says on a night when Pella went 7-of-31 from three and missed their first 13 from beyond the arc, he was happy to see his team even make it a game, but there is a lot to work on after suffering the tough loss at home.

Logan Shetterly finished with 26 points and Treyton Sturgeon added 15 points and six rebounds.

The Lady Dutch played a solid first half, drawing even with Dallas Center-Grimes at 23-23, but could not adjust to a Fillies defensive change and stalled on offense as the girls in red and white pulled away.

Girls Coach Jerod Garland says the Lady Dutch once again showed their potential in the first half, but as happened often in the season, couldn’t find their stride after falling behind quickly in the 3rd quarter.

It was a special senior night for Courtney Thompson, as she hit her first three shots from beyond the arc in her first career varsity start.

The Lady Dutch are 11-9 and 8-5 in league competition, while Pella’s boys fall to 14-5 and in a tie for 3rd with DCG at 8-5 in league play. Both have their final doubleheader of the season on Friday when they hit the road to take on Grinnell.
