As absences remain higher than normal in the Pella Community School District, administration is weighing options to keep students safe. Superintendent Greg Ebeling says with nearly 10 percent of Jefferson Intermediate School gone for more than a week and the rest of the district hovering between 4-5% absenteeism, it remains a challenge to keep students and staff safe and maintain a high level of educational engagement. Ebeling says a federal judge overturning the Iowa Legislature’s mask mandate ban gives them more options, but that doesn’t mean they want to jump into any action without thorough review of data.
