Christian Opportunity Center is celebrating Roberta Bergman as she retires after 20 years of employment at the New Horizons Academy Day Care Center. Roberta began her career journey as part of COC’s vocational program, where she worked with a job coach to develop the skills needed for her role in the daycare kitchen. Her coworkers at New Horizon also played a significant role in her experience, according to a release by COC.

Roberta says she found immense joy in her work, particularly in interacting with the children at the daycare. “I loved to make the babies laugh and smile,” she shared.

As she transitions into retirement, Roberta looks forward to embracing a new chapter in her life. She plans to enjoy her favorite hobbies and is anticipating a trip to Hawaii in the spring.

Roberta will attend COC’s Life Skills program a few days a week to ensure a “fulfilling” retirement. The Life Skills program is a non-work-related program designed to help individuals develop life and social skills through community-based activities. This program will allow Roberta to stay connected, practice new skills, and engage with her community. She also plans to participate in workout classes and volunteer.

Emily Woodwell, COC Program Coordinator, shared, “Roberta is a great example of success through services here at Christian Opportunity Center. She worked hard to transition to independence in her job and has continued to grow in her abilities and confidence over the years. COC has helped her prepare for this next phase, whether it’s through support in her home or the community. We’re excited to see her enjoy this new chapter!”

When asked what she will miss most about her job, Roberta replied, “I will miss the kids and my coworkers—they felt like family to me.”
