The Newton boys basketball team ended their season Thursday night in Pella with a second round Class 3A Substate 7 loss to the Dutch 53-37, as heard on the KRLS3 Stream. It was the Cardinals’ third loss to Pella this season, as Newton finishes the year 12-11.
The first quarter saw both teams take brief leads, with the Dutch up 12-11 when the first eight minutes ended. Pella expanded the lead to 20-18 at the end of the first half. The Dutch then pulled away early in the third quarter scoring nine straight points, and headed into the 4th quarter with a 36-24 lead. Pella then outscored Newton 17-13 in the final period.
Junior Caden Klein led the Cardinals with 14 points while sophomore Grant Osby added 12. Newton head coach Jason Carter was proud of the team’s effort Thursday night and throughout the season.
“Twelve wins for this group, with one starter coming back, I am just incredibly proud of how hard they worked and battled night in and night out.”
This is the second straight year the Cardinal boys basketball team has had their season end in the second round of Substate. Last year, Newton lost at Winterset 52-46.
