The Newton Fire Department has acquired lighter and more secure firefighter gear through a local grant, and intends to purchase more in the future. The department received a $5,000 grant from the Jasper Community Foundation to buy dual-certified fire gear and helmets designed for grass fires and vehicle accidents. Newton firefighters have already used the new gear during these types of incidents and in training, and have said it’s cooler and more comfortable to wear.

Newton Fire Captain Ryan Volk learned about the new gear while attending a fire conference in 2023. A key part of the information he obtained was a study that found traditional fire helmets may not stay secure during vehicle impact. In contrast, helmets with multiple contact points, like bicycle helmets, remain in place and provide better head protection.

The $5,000 grant allowed the Newton Fire Department to purchase nine sets of dual-certified gear and new helmets for on-duty staff, and the department eventually plans to outfit all its personnel.
