
The Pella Christian girls tennis team outlasted Knoxville for a 7-4 victory to improve to 6-0 overall on the season Monday night, while the Eagles boys soccer team used a big first half to survive for a 5-4 win on the road at Central Iowa United.
On Eagle Lane, the Pella Christian girls tennis team won four of the six singles matches to build up a 4-2 lead heading into doubles play. The singles victories came from Ava Breems at #2 (6-3, 6-4), Addie Van Arendonk at #3 (6-3, 7-5), Renae VanWyk at #5 (6-1, 6-0), and Kate Braafhart at #6 (4-6, 6-4, 1-0). In doubles play, all five matches went to super tiebreakers, with the Eagles winning three of them. Addie Van Arendonk and Lexi Branderhorst moved Pella Christian within a point of the match win with a 7-5, 2-6, 1-0 win at #2, before Ali Pleima and Elsa Breems secured the overall victory with a 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 win at #5. The duo of Trinley Gibson and Nora Van Arendonk added the final point on the night for the Eagles with a 5-7, 6-2, 1-0 victory at #4 doubles.
In State Center, the Pella Christian boys soccer team wasted little time building up a lead, scoring four goals in the opening 20 minutes of the game. Ethan Van Arendonk got the scoring started with his first goal in the 13th minute, before Central Iowa United scored an own goal in the 14th minute and Theo Hugen added a goal in the 15th minute to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead. Van Arendonk, who entered the game tied for second in the state in goals scored, added to his season total by scoring in the 17th and 32nd minutes to record the hat trick, giving him 19 goals in 10 games. Elias Keegan added two assists in the win. The Trojans battled back in the second half to cut the deficit to 5-4, but Pella Christian held them off to improve to 6-4 overall on the season.
The Eagles girls tennis team returns to home action this afternoon against Indianola at 4:15 pm, while the boys soccer squad will join the girls team for a home doubleheader against Oskaloosa tonight. The Pella Christian girls soccer team will open the matches against the Indians at 5:30 pm, followed by the boys contest at approximately 7:15 pm.
