A small but mighty group of Newton Cardinals are poised to make a postseason push after a strong weekend of events at the 2025 Drake Relays.
The weekend was highlighted by multi-sport star Caden Klein, who capped off the three-day event with a 3rd place finish in the 400 Meter Hurdles. Klein has high hopes for where the team can land in the next few weeks to gear up for the state meet.
Full interview with Klein:
Caden earned a 6th place finish in the 100 Meter Dash (10.78 seconds) and 5th in the 400 Meter Dash (49.26) on Friday. Newton’s 4×200 group of Nick Thomason, Reilly Trease, Christian Ergenbright, and Caden Klein were 2nd best in that event (1:27.11). Trease placed 24th in the 110 Hurdles earlier in the day.
Saturday morning started with the Cardinals showcasing new uniforms and a top 20 finish in the 4×100 relay. The group of Nick Thomason, Reilly Trease, Christian Ergenbright, and Ali Yahia placed 18th (43.17), behind just three Class 3A schools in those standings.
The Drake Relays started with a finals appearance in the shot put for Nick Milburn. His 8th place throw of 54-5.5 puts him in contention for a similar finish in a potential return trip to Drake Stadium in May.
