Habitat for Humanity of Marion County is finishing up builds of three new homes.
Homes are being constructed and completed in Knoxville, Bussey, Melcher-Dallas and will be sold to home owners with an affordable mortgage. Habitat for Humanity has a mission where everyone has a safe and affordable place to live. The organization carries this mission by building new homes and through their critical home repair program. These homes are built and are affordable with help of all the hands that make it possible as the Knoxville home is being constructed by the high school building trades program along with the Bussey house being constructed by Twin Cedars building trades students.
People can apply for a home or critical home assistance dependent upon income requirements and the organization also requires sweat equity as the future home owner will put their own manual labor into the home or volunteer in other aspects in the community. Home celebrations are coming up for the Bussey home on Wednesday with the Knoxville home on June 4th and the Melcher-Dallas home in early July. Amy Meyer with Habitat for Humanity says these home celebrations are emotional days after everything that has gone into making it happen.
“The home celebration is just a remarkable day. It’s so much hard work, it’s so many hours, not just construction on site but the fundraising piece to get all of the dollars in place to make this happen. The families put a lot of energy into these houses. We require sweat equity which means that families themselves have to work on the homes or volunteer in other positions throughout the community so they’ve worked really hard and they have that ownership over that house so it’s usually a pretty emotional day.”
