Newton Police Chief Rob Burdess is reminding residents of the restrictions involved when using ATVs and UTVs on the city’s streets. The current ordinance on ATV and UTV use was passed in 2022. It prohibits these vehicles from being operated on Highway 14, trails and sidewalks, city land, or in parks. ATV and UTV operators in Newton must be at least 18 and have a valid driver’s license, proof of insurance, and a Department of Natural Resources registration. The ordinance also requires ATVs or UTVs to be equipped with headlights, taillights, mirrors, mufflers, seatbelts, and a horn. The Newton Police Chief says violating the ordinance carries a $70 fine, along with a 15% surcharge and court costs, all totaling $135.
