The Newton baseball team got out to an early lead Thursday night, but Pella rallied to prevail in a 10-4 Little Hawkeye Conference win heard live on the KRLS3 stream.
The Cardinals pushed the first run across the plate in the top of the first on two singles, a hit batter, and a walk; but the inning ended with the bases loaded. Newton got two more runs in the top of the second, but stranded an additional two runners on base. The Dutch scored single runs in their half of the second, third, and fourth innings to tie the score at three. Then in the bottom of the fourth inning, Pella strung together some hits and capitalized on Cardinal errors to score four runs and take a 7-3 lead. Newton scored their last run in the top of the sixth on a Dutch throwing error, while Pella scored three runs in the bottom of the inning to secure the season sweep.
The Cardinals had seven hits while the Dutch had fifteen, and both teams committed five errors. Newton left eight runners on base and Pella stranded nine. Cade Bauer led the Cardinal offense with two hits in four at bats, two runs batted in, and two runs scored. Gabe Otto and Dakota Winkleman batted in the other two Newton runs. For the Dutch, Samuel Carlson went three for four with two runs batted in, while Isaiah Kettler scored a run and was two for two with two runs batted in. Lucas Jablonski and Lincoln Kocour both scored twice and went two for three with one run batted in. Jablonski’s hit was the game’s only home run, which was a solo shot to center field.
Pella improved to 16-4 overall and 10-3 in the conference, while Newton fell to 4-15 on the season and 2-11 in conference action. The Dutch hosts Norwalk tonight in a doubleheader at 5:00 p.m., and the second game can be heard live on the KNIA3 stream. The Cardinals host a doubleheader against Oskaloosa this evening at 5:00 p.m., and the second game can be heard on the KRLS3 stream.
