The Norwalk softball team was on pace for a remarkable 21-hour achievement when Mother Nature interfered once again on Thursday.
After sweeping a doubleheader vs. Indianola on Wednesday night, the Class 4A third-ranked Warriors returned to their home diamond Thursday morning and finished off a 9-0 win over Oskaloosa that started on Monday. After a quick bus ride to Dallas Center-Grimes for a game moved up to Noon due to weather concerns, Norwalk led the 4A second-ranked Mustangs 2-0 in the top of the fifth when play was suspended by lightning and rain. The Warriors will travel back to DC-G on Monday and resume the game at 12:00 p.m., looking to force a tie for first in the Little Hawkeye Conference standings.
As it stands now, Norwalk is 25-3 overall and 14-2 in conference play. DC-G, which split a doubleheader at Norwalk on June 11, has just one conference defeat.
The Warriors led Oskaloosa 4-0 in the fourth inning on Monday when play was suspended. They wasted no time finishing off the Indians 9-0 in five. Nyah Hulbert, Bailey Birmingham, Carly Brewer, Maddie Gullion and Dani Peters all had two-hit games, combining for six runs scored and seven RBI. Birmingham had a triple and scored three runs. Peters hit a double and Brewer drove in three. Brewer pitched four scoreless innings, striking out eight, and Leah Crick worked the fifth to complete the shutout.
At DC-G, Hulbert led off the game with her 15th home run of the season and Gullion hit an RBI double in the third.
Norwalk Baseball rained out
The Norwalk baseball team was scheduled to complete their suspended game vs. Oskaloosa on Thursday, but impending thunderstorms forced a cancellation. The Indians led the game 5-1 in the fourth inning when play was suspended on Monday.
The Warriors travel to Dallas Center-Grimes tonight for a conference game at 7:00 p.m. The two teams split a doubleheader earlier this season.
