Newton Mayor and past City Council Representative Evelyn George says no city experience is required to serve in either of those two positions. George is not running for re-election after over twelve years of service to the community. She is encouraging anyone interested in serving on the city council or as mayor to reach out to her, or the city staff, for more information. George believes good traits for the mayor and city council representatives include a love for the community, being a life-long learner, and possessing good financial understanding.

“You need to come in wanting the best interests for the full city. Be open to learning, talking, and meeting with people with differing opinions. We need some strong, level-headed people that make good, solid decisions.”

In addition to Mayor, three Newton city council seats will be up for election in November. Those seats are currently held by Second Ward Representative Melissa Dalton, Fourth Ward Representative Steve Mullan, and At-Large Representative Randy Ervin. The Second Ward is northeast Newton, while the southwest quadrant of the community is Ward Four.  Mayor George says she would be happy to meet with anyone who has an interest in running for Mayor or the city council. She adds that city staff can also provide information at city hall, or residents can look on the city website, which can be found here.
