The Pella Christian girls tennis squad co-hosted the first annual Tulip City Tussle with Pella High on Saturday and took 11th place as a team.

In singles action, Ava Breems dropped her first match of the tournament in a super tiebreaker 4-2, 1-4, 9-7, but battled back to finish the day strong. In the B singles bracket, Breems opened with a 4-0, 4-0 win over Allie Spencer of Marion, before knocking off Makayla Martin of Clear Lake 4-1, 4-0. Ava then beat Madalynn Sertterh of Ottumwa 4-3, 4-2, and also won in the semifinal match over Abby Huss of St. Edmond 4-0, 4-0 to advance to the final match, where she defeated Natalie Steele of Fairfield to take 9th place. Also competing in singles play, Lexi Branderhorst won one match on the day in the B bracket, defeating Clara Britton of Sergeant Bluff-Luton 4-2, 4-3.

In doubles play, Trinley Gibson and Chloe Nikkel won their first match 4-3, 4-3 over Paityn Enke and Ashley Roberts of Clear Lake, before falling to the B bracket in their next match. Gibson and Nikkel opened the B bracket by defeating Aubrey Williamson and Kate Livingood of Aplington-Parkersburg 4-1, 4-1, but finished 2-2 on the day with a loss in the quarterfinals. Kate Braafhart and Elsa Breems made up the Eagles’ other doubles team in the tournament, and the duo reached the semifinals of the B bracket. After dropping their first match of the day, Kate and Elsa came back to win their first B bracket matchup 4-3, 4-0 over Kennedy Barnhart and Maddi Vanpelt of Marion. In the second round, Braafhart and Breems defeated Maddison Loge and Jacelyn Ainley of Clear Lake 4-1, 4-1, then defeated Leah Corht and Brooklyn Coenen of Oskaloosa in the quarterfinals 4-3, 4-3 before falling in the semis.
