The Newton City Council is a step closer to adding stop signs on East 12th Street South at South 13th Avenue East, and on West 3rd Street North at North 3rd Avenue West. On Tuesday night, City Council members passed the second reading of proposed ordinances establishing the new stop signs measures for both intersections. Newton Police Chief Rob Burdess says there have been twelve reported accidents on East 12th Street South at South 13th Avenue East since 2020, but he can not definitely say they could have been prevented if stop signs had been in place for north and southbound traffic. East 12th Street South at South 13th Avenue East is on the south edge of Newton, as drivers on County Highway S-74 enter or leave the city. North and south drivers on West 3rd Street North would stop at North Third Avenue West, a change being sought to increase safety for pedestrians walking to and from the recently opened splash pad. The intersection is on the northwest corner of the water attraction.
