
The NCMP Aquagirls won their third straight home dual match in dominating fashion Tuesday, while the Cardinal boys and girls cross-country teams hosted their annual meet at Maytag Park.
The Aquagirls defeated Centerville 129-16, winning all eleven events and achieving their highest dual score of the season. Individual event winners included Harper Barton in the 50-meter (28.67) and 100-meter freestyle (1:02.14), and Tori White in the 200-meter individual medley (2:46.09) and the 100-meter backstroke. Kimberlee Miller took first in the 200-meter freestyle (2:40.9), Julia Nedder won the 100-meter butterfly (1:18.03), Temple Barton took first in the 100-meter breaststroke, and Reid McCloud won the 400-meter freestyle. The Aquagirls three first place relay teams consisted of Emalee Weuve, Alexa Van Maanen, Brilea Moffit, and Nedder in the 200-meter medley relay (2:29.58), and Harper and Temple Barton, McCloud, and White in the 200-meter (58.11) and 400-meter (4:27.74) freestyle relays. The NCMP Aquagirls are now 3-0 in duals with their next competition in West Des Moines on Saturday at the Tiger Tankers Invitational at Valley High School.
The Newton boys and girls cross-country teams competed against runners from seven other schools in the 49th Newton – Steve McDermott Invitational at Maytag Park on Tuesday. The Cardinal boys’ team finished third while the Newton girls were not scored as a team, as only four Cardinal runners participated. Leading the way for the boys was Cooper Christy in 8th place with a time of 17:46.8. Lance Zaabel was 11th (18:13.4), Abel Aldama was 28th (20.04.3), Levi Zaabel was 31st (20:19.7), David Wickett was 36th (20:32.6), Drew Lamont was 40th (20:42.3) and Ben Magana was 46th (21.98.3). Audrey Muckler produced the best finish for the Newton girls, placing 4th (21:17.1), while Talia Friedman finished 9th (23:07.2). Sarah Malow crossed the finish line in 19th (24:08.1), and Meghan Trout took 27th (26:48.8). The Newton boys and girls cross-country teams are now off until Saturday, October 4th, when they compete in the Wartburg College Invitational in Waverly.
