The Newton Cardinal football team will recognize 21 seniors on this year’s varsity roster tonight, as the team celebrates senior night in the regular season finale against Marion at H.A. Lynn Stadium. Newton head coach Andy Swedenhjelm says this senior class is more than just good athletes.
“They are great character kids. They have great academic profiles, and provide a great representation of our program. Their work ethic is really unmatched. They are always out doing extra stuff.”
The Cardinals are 7-1 and claimed the Class 4A District 4 Championship with a 35-7 home win over Grinnell last Friday night. They will host a home play-off game next Friday. The Marion Wolves are 2-6, and won their senior night at home last week by beating Oskaloosa 21-13. The team’s other win was at home over Center Point-Urbana 21-12. The Wolves have generated 1,263 yards of total offense this season and given up an average of 29 points per game. Newton has amassed 3,363 yards of offense, and has allowed opponents an average of 20 points a game.
Kick-off is at 7:30 p.m. tonight with pregame coverage on kniakrls.com KRLS3 and Cardinal TV YouTube channel at 7:00 p.m.
