It took a blocked extra point with just over a minute to go as the Simpson College football team held on for a 28-27 victory on the road against Loras Saturday heard live on 94.3 KNIA.
The Storm scored on their first drive of the game on a Jayden Thoreson to Noah Cracraft connection to lead 7-0, and that would be the only scoring until the Storm drove 72 yards in just 24 seconds to score right before halftime to lead 14-0 at the break with a Cason Penyich receiving touchdown.
A scoreless third quarter gave way to the fourth, and the Storm seemingly took full control on a Mekhi Holmes pick-six interception to grow the lead to 21-0. A Loras touchdown, and a blocked extra point, was answered by another Thoreson to Cracraft connection as the Storm led 28-6 with just 8:29 to go in the game. The Duhawks drove down the field on five plays to score a touchdown and two-point conversion, then did the same thing after a Storm punt just two minutes later to cut the deficit to 28-21. Simpson ran multiple minutes off the clock but were forced to punt again, and the Duhawks found the endzone with 1:11 remaining, but Noah Noland burst through the line and blocked his second extra point of the day to preserve the lead. Cracraft would handle the onside kick, and the Storm survived to earn the win.
Head coach Reed Hoskins said games like these test your depth and mental toughness, but a win is a win and in conference play sometimes that is all you can ask for.
Thoreson threw for 265 yards and three scores, Demarico Young rushed for 118 yards, and Noland had 17 tackles. Simpson is now 5-3 on the season, and will host rival Central at Buxton Stadium on Saturday.
