A Newton man facing a felony theft charge for allegedly stealing $14,000 from a Newton woman has entered a guilty plea to a lesser charge, and awaits his sentencing. According to Newton Police, the victim gave David Matthew Sears a check back in August, to purchase new windows for her home. Court documents state Sears provided her with a fake invoice, cashed the $14,000 check, and then didn’t respond to the victim when she inquired about when the windows would be delivered. The 43-year-old was charged with first degree theft, a class C felony, and forgery, an aggravated misdemeanor. District Court Judge Charles Sinnard accepted Sears’ guilty plea to the forgery charge late last week, and set his sentencing for December 1st. Until then, the Newton man remains free on a $12,000 bond.
