Voter turnout in Jasper County was 13.4% for Tuesday’s City and School Election. Jasper County Auditor Jenna Jennings says unofficial results show 3.376 ballots were cast out of 25,193 registered voters.
There were no contested races in Newton. Current At-Large Council member Randy Ervin ran unopposed for Mayor, and received 907 votes. There were also 90 write-in votes cast for Mayor. Ervin will replace Mayor Evelyn George, who narrowly defeated him in the last city election. Mayor George did not seek a second term, so she could travel more with her husband. Second Ward Newton Council member Melissa Dalton got 238 votes as she ran unopposed to keep her seat. Jeff Holschuh will be filling the At-Large Council seat Ervin currently holds. Holschuh was unopposed and collected 940 votes, while 38 write-in ballots were submitted. Amy Roth had no opposition in Newton’s Fourth Ward, to replace long-time council member Steve Mullan. Mullan first served on the Newton City Council in 2005. Roth’s vote total was 283. Both the Second and Fourth Wards in Newton had 10 write-in ballots each.
The School Board race in Newton featured three incumbents and one newcomer running for four seats. The vote totals are 1,012 for current School Board President Robyn Friedman, 1,009 for Travis Padget, 996 for newcomer Hilary Foster, and 973 for Ray Whipple.
