In an effort to better protect certain city facilities and residents in city parks, the Newton City Council has approved the installation of 103 security cameras at 16 sites throughout the city. 

Mahaska Communication Group, known as MCG, will install network fiber to all the camera locations and set up the cameras as well. The Oskaloosa company was one of five bidders, and their low quote of $127,358 was unanimously accepted by the Newton City Council Monday night. The project’s estimated cost was $135,000.00. Facilities where new security cameras will be installed include:

  • The Newton Police Department, Fire Department, and City Hall (24)
  • Newton Water Distribution (5)
  • The Newton Police Department Animal Control Facility (1)
  • The Newton Water Tower (1)
  • Maytag Park (28)
  • Sunset Park (4)
  • The Softball Complex on North 19th Avenue (4) 
  • Woodland Park (12) 
  • Agnus Patterson Park (12)
  • Westwood Clubhouse (6) 
  • The Newton Public Library (8) 

The project is expected to be completed by June 3rd of next year, and will be paid with various amounts of money from the City of Newton’s General Funds, Water Funds, Water Pollution Control Funds, and Golf Funds.
