The hail damaged roofs on the Maytag Park Caretakers House and the West Shelter will be repaired in accordance to keeping the City of Newton’s National Historic Preservation District designation for Maytag Park. The damage was the result of a May 7th, 2023 hail storm.

Maytag Park is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places as a historic district, with each structure contributing to that designation. Newton City Administrator Matt Muckler says It was important to seek quotes for repair materials that are in compliance with keeping the National Historic Preservation District designation in good standing. That meant preserving the slate roofs on the two structures. The Newton City Council this week, approved the one quote obtained from a qualified contractor, Renaissance Historic Exteriors in Rockford, Illinois, will complete the restoration of the roofs to the Maytag Caretakers House and West Shelter. The quote for the Maytag Caretakers House is $386,165, while the bid on the Maytag West Shelter is $95,234. According to Muckler, Property Insurance Funds will pay for the combined repair costs of $481,399, so the city’s general fund budget will not be impacted.
