
The Newton girls wrestling team opened the season Tuesday by placing fourth out of the 23 teams at the Sigourney Keota Girls Wrestling Meet. The Cardinals had five wrestlers place in the top five. Ashlyn VanManen went 4-0 and took first place via a forfeit in the Championship match at 235 pounds. Kylee Adams went 3-1 and took second place at 115 pounds, losing the first place match in a 7-1 decision. Alivia Conley won 2 of her 3 matches and was third at 125 pounds. Rosa Borja took 4th place at 110 pounds, winning one of three matches, while Sierra Woody went 1-1 and placed 5th at 100 pounds.
The Newton girls wrestling team collected 120 points, while the meet was won by Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont with 178 points.
The Cardinal girls wrestlers’ next competition on the mat will be December 2nd, when they host Indianola.
