The Newton girls basketball team and the boys swim team opened their seasons on the road Tuesday night, with the basketball team getting a win and the swim team finishing 7th.

In Chariton, the girls basketball team stepped up their defense in the second half and pulled away from a halftime tie at 21, to win 49 to 33. Newton outscored the Chargers 15 to 3 in the third quarter and 13 to 9 in the fourth. The team forced Chariton into 15 turnovers and only 22% shooting. Junior guard Payton Carkhuff had 14 points for the Cardinals while sophomore forward Addyson Cibula added 13 and senior forward Tori White 8. The Newton girls basketball team will attempt to improve to 2-0 Tuesday when they host Grinnell in another non-conference game.

The Newton boys swim team accumulated 124 points in the Ankeny Boys Swimming Sprint Invite at the DMACC Ankeny Campus pool. That placed them 7th in the eight-team field. Newton senior Finn Martin won two of the six events. He is the defending State Champion in the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle, and those are the events he won with times of 20.99 and 46.68. The Cardinals had two other top ten finishes, as the 200-yard freestyle (1:33.44) and the 200-yard medley (1:42.22) relays both finished 6th. The Newton boys swim team will have their next meet at the Newton YMCA on Tuesday, when they host Indianola.
