
The Norwalk girls wrestling team placed second in their home dual tournament on Tuesday night, while the Warrior girls basketball team improved to 2-0 with a 68-34 win at Bondurant-Farrar.
Girls Wrestling
The girls wrestlers hosted a six-team dual meet and finished 2-1, improving their overall record to 4-3 on the season. Norwalk dominated their two pool opponents, defeating North Polk 70-0 and topping Martensdale-St. Marys 60-18. The Warriors faced Carlisle in the championship dual and lost 61-18.
Individually, freshman 100-pounder Hannah Schmitz had a perfect 3-0 night, pinning all three of her opponents. Mya Wojtowicz was 3-0 at 125, recording two pins and a forfeit, and Kaylie Popiano went 2-0 with two pins at 130. Norwalk totaled 13 pins as a team, including two each by Margaret Evans and Cennedy Allen, one by Madelyn Carroll and one by Malaika Scholten.
The Warriors will return to the mats on Thursday, December 4, traveling to Dallas Center-Grimes for a Little Hawkeye Conference dual.
Girls Basketball
Sophomore Braylyn Birmingham posted her second 30-point game in as many nights to lead the third-ranked (Class 4A) Norwalk girls basketball team past Bondurant-Farrar 68-34. The Warriors led 35-22 at halftime, then amped up the defensive pressure and outscored the Bluejays 23-5 in the third quarter.
Birmingham made all 10 of her free throws en route to 30 points and also grabbed eight rebounds. Makenna Roeder scored 11 points and Hannah Overholser also reached double digits with 10. The Warriors improved to 2-0 on the season. They will host Ballard on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m.
