The Pella Christian girls and boys basketball teams each picked up lopsided wins over Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont on the road Tuesday night in a non-conference varsity doubleheader heard live on the KRLS2 stream.
The Eagle girls started out strong leading 22-12 at the end of the first quarter and went into halftime with a 34-25 lead. In the third quarter is where the Pella Christian girls hit their stride as they outscored the Rockets 23-0 in the frame to break the game open. The Eagles would secure the 65-27 win to improve to 2-1 on the season. Jessa DeVries led the Pella Christian girls in scoring with 25 points while Rachel Kacmarynski had 21.
The Eagle boys were dominant in the first half of their contest holding the Rockets to no points in the first quarter and they went into halftime with a 40-8 lead. In the second half, Pella Christian played many of their reserves with running clock and closed out the game with a 62-21 win. Gilbert Flagel led the Eagle boys in scoring with 19 points while Devan Runner had nine. The Pella Christian boys start their season 2-0. Head Coach Joe Steinkamp says he was happy with his team’s effort in the contest.
“Defensively we really just want to be active with our hands, makes passes difficult and really try and keep the ball out of the paint. We have some really good individual defenders and we’re trying to be better help defenders and that’s still a work in progress but what I like about them is they’re tough and they’re coachable so I think we will keep growing in that area. We are a lot better than we were a couple weeks ago and I hope we will get better down the road.”
The Eagle boys and girls will next compete on Friday at Oskaloosa.
