Newton Boys And Girls Basketball Teams Win At Des Moines East
The Newton boys and girls basketball teams both picked up wins in non-conference games at Des Moines East on Tuesday night. The Cardinal boys won a hard-fought game over the Scarlets 53-49, while the girls rolled to a 53-15 win.
The Newton boys were unable to pull away from Des Moines East, but held on to single digit leads most of the game. The Cardinals led 14-13, 29-26, and 43-35 at the end of each of the first three quarters, before pulling out the four-point win. Newton had three players reach double figures as Dawson Maki scored 21 points, Isaiah Slaughter 15, and Karter Holmes 10. Head coach Jason Carter felt his team took a great step forward, beating a physical and scrappy team on the road.
“I thought we did a better job of executing at times. We did a better job of getting the ball into the post and executing a few of our sets to get some easy buckets, especially in times of need. And I thought the kids defended really well.”
The Newton girls had a season-high 39 points at halftime, and limited Des Moines East to one point in each of the 3rd and 4th quarters. Sophie Coady scored 14 points for the Newton girls while Camryn Klein contributed 11 and Tori White had 8. Head coach Jake Bennett was pleased to see how well the team moved the ball on offense.
“I feel like so far this year, the ball has been stuck on one side. Our goal today was to make sure we get the ball moving and rotating. Get some good inside outside looks. I think we accomplished that pretty well today.”
The Cardinal girls are now 3-2 while the boys improved to 2-2. Both teams will host Dallas Center-Grimes Friday Night.
