The end of the year means tax season is soon approaching, and federal legislation passed this year has major changes coming soon.

Brett Nikkel is a professional CPA with Van Mannen, Siestra, Meyer & Nikkel in Pella, and says the reconciliation bill signed by President Donald Trump earlier this year made tweaks to the current tax year, with bigger differences ahead starting in January.

End of year donations can still improve a tax situation in 2025 before December 31st at 11:59 p.m., but Nikkel says that’s only for those who itemize their returns. In 2026, that number becomes a $1000 above-the-line deduction, which may have some taxpayers consider different strategies.
