The heavy rainfall has made for tough going for area farmers right in the middle of the harvest season; but dry weather over the next few days may permit them to catch up.
Farmers have had difficulty trying to get caught up on their harvesting due to rain-sodden fields; Justin Huebner with Two Rivers Cooperative tells KNIA/KRLS News conditions have been rough, but the forecast provides some hope.
“It just hasn’t really given much for opportunities for going out and doing any harvest, whether it’s corn or soybeans,” Huebner says. “The forward looking forecast here, at least for right now, looks to be pretty good for next week; I think you’ll see a lot of guys going after it pretty hard next week once it, once it dries up a little bit and gets fit.”
With advance warning but little time to react, Huebner says some farmers had to make a tough decision about which crop to go after first; some opted for corn, while others chose soybean.
He says many producers were more concerned with bringing in corn, which is unusual; this means that some soybean plants are beginning to age and turn colors as the season wears on.
