The Indianola City Council approved plans to upgrade the traffic signals at pedestrian crosswalks on major roadways at their most recent meeting.

Indianola City Manager Ryan Waller tells KNIA News the improvements are a much needed safety upgrade.

“We’re going to be improving the signalization to high traffic areas such as 65/69 and Highway 92, so pedestrians will be able to cross safely and efficiently, and we’re also adding some battery backups so in the event of a power failure they will still work properly.”

The city applied for several grants to help fund the project. Waller also said that the improvements will be aesthetic as well as for safety reasons, as the city will now be able to take down the stop signs attached to cabinets lining the highway.
