The City of Newton’s Utilities Department will be flushing certain fire hydrants today and Saturday. Newton Utilities Director Jody Rhone says that only hydrants with the highest flow and those at dead ends will be flushed. Residents could experience a temporary drop in water pressure or slight discoloration of water. If there is discoloration, Rhone says run cold water until it is gone, and do not do laundry or use hot water until the water clears.

Hydrants north of 1st Avenue are being flushed today, while those south of 1st Avenue will be flushed Saturday. Fire hydrant flushing is done to clear water mains of internal corrosion and residue, which naturally build up over time. Newton water customers with questions should contact the city’s Utilities Department at 641-792-6622.
